The Rector of the Kursk State Medical University (KSMU), honoured physician of the Russian Federation, deputy of the Kursk Regional Duma, professor Lazarenko Victor Anatolievich started the year of 2012 with an official visit to Sri-Lanka. Accompanied by the Rectorate Advisor of KSMU Mohamad Chahine, the rector professor V.A. Lazarenko had four different meetings during the visit with the intention of improving the relations between KSMU and the Sri-Lankan Medical Council and The University of Colombo.

The first meeting with Nandimitra Ekanakayake the Sri Lanka Deputy-Minister of Education and Andrey M. Nazarkin the director of the Russian Science and Culture Centre was held in the Russian Embassy and included discussions concerning the applicants and students decision making in choosing the right university for further studies and promoting KSMU. Dialogues between the rector and the parents of KSMU applicants also took place in the centre where different questions were raised concerning KSMU education quality and its programs.
The meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Professor Kshanika Hirimburegama and his delegates was held on the university main campus. The Vice Chancellor familiarized the rector professor V.A. Lazarenko with the history and the facilities of the Colombo University. The University of Colombo was established by the State Council in April 1942. The nucleus of the University was formed by amalgamating the Ceylon Medical College founded in 1870 and the Ceylon University College founded in 1921, both of which were incorporated into the University. Therefore, the history of the university goes back to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The University of Colombo representatives showed a very keen interest towards relationships with KSMU in different fields such as sharing experience, exchanging lecturers and scientific works.

During the next meeting with the Sri-Lankan Medical Council the Rector discussed the matter concerning the requirements for the recognition of KSMU in Sri-Lanka. The council expressed satisfaction with the performance of KSMU graduates who are currently working in Sri-Lanka. Prof. Lazarenko invited the Medical Council to visit KSMU to get acquainted with our programs and facilities.
The Medical Faculty of the Colombo University was the final convention attended by the Rector during this visit. The Dean of the Medical Faculty Prof. Rohan W. Jayasekara and all the members of his office were present to converse and debate with the Rector. Various ideas and issues were discussed such as students practical exchange, elective courses, scientific work, exchange experience between the medical faculties and cooperating in the field of online lectures.

In conclusion of the visit, the Rector had many doubts and queries cleared in respect of the applicants and their parents, expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation in education and scientific work as well as chances for better training and international exchange.
During the Rector’s visit to Sri Lanka, all the necessary information for the University of Colombo had been provided by the Vice-Rector for Scientific Work and Innovations Professor P.V. Kalutskiy.
